I imagine that most people in business would answer "no."

On the other hand, most people in business wouldn't recognize when they were doing things in a complicated way that could be simplified with algebra. Algebra problems in textbook form are not going to show up in the business world. But situations that can be simplified by a clever use of mathematics do in fact occur.

I had a first hand experience with this when a motel assistant manager complained to me about how tedious it was to sort through contradictory financial records in order to find the errors. I showed her how, by filling out the balance sheets with algebraic variables rather than numbers, she could come up with formulas that would help her do this with much less guess work.

Another experience I had involved moving from one state to another and filling out pro-rated state income tax returns for the two states. The state I moved to had ridiculously complicated instructions on how to do this. I found that after I translated these instructions into algebraic language, I could "simplify the expressions" to obtain a much simpler formula with which to compute what the state wanted me to compute. I skipped their complicated form, attached my own sheet of paper with my calculations, and stated justifications like "the distributive property"!

I received my full tax refund.

Anyway, the 2 points I get for this answer moves me up to Level 3.

Of course you do. If your boss asks how much money to budget for yearly expenses based on a known amount for a single quarter, you would use algebra to figure it out.

For instance, if your company has spent $25,000 on expenses in the current quarter and you need to budget for all of next year, the equation is:

Year Expenses (X) = $25,000/quarter X 4 quarters.

That's algebra!!
