I was wondering the same thing..it did kinda sneak up on us...and if you look..it has no tail..as if it were heading straight towards earth...usually comets have a tail that shows it's passing by...and another thing..what if the Mayan calander theory is wrong..given they didn't use the standard calanders we use today....with time and star pattern changes..could it be that it's not 2012..it could be 2007 or 2008....would anyone tell the people of earth..I highly doubt it...it would cause mayhem and lawlessness.

That comet is not in an Earth crossing orbit. Any good amateur astronomer can independently determine that by observing the position of the comet for a time and using freely available software to compute its orbit; no trust in government would be needed. A really talented amateur astronomer could write his own software to do that so no trust in any other person would be needed to know it will not hit.

Why would comet Holmes suddenly veer off course and hit us? It is not even coming this way.
Some people claim that because we do not see a tail it means that the tail is pointing away from us.
Some claim that a comet's tail is always 'behind' the comet which is false. The tail of a comet points away from the Sun, regardless of the movement of a comet. If a comet is moving directly away from the Sun, it will have its tail in front (in the direction of its movement).
Therefore, you should not use the tail (or lack thereof) as an indication of its direction.

first of all, dear "mad as hell": you're an idiot. thanks.
second of all, the orbit of Comet Holmes has been known for decades, and it comes nowhere close to Earth. "The government" has nothing to do with a cover-up, as most comets are tracked by amateurs and private research organizations/universities. There's also the niggling little detail that there's more than one national government on the planet, and I seriously doubt all 180-odd national governments would be able to coordinate a global armageddon cover-up conspiracy.

NO, NO , NO.
Comet Holmes' orbit lies entirely between that of Mars and Jupiter. It will not ever get closer to Earth. This time, the governments are not lying to keep us from panicking.

It was discovered over 100 years ago; it takes 7 years to orbit the Sun and it hasn't hit us yet, so why would it hit us now?
