It is a GE Model # GMS10AAMARWW Serial #FD901559 Made in 03/02. The black compressor at the bottom seems to be doing something and generates heat, but there is no apparent cooling effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If the compressor is running, it may be that the freon has leaked out of the cooling system. You'll have to call an appliance repair person to check this. If the freon is gone, they'll have to find and repair (solder) the leak before refilling the freon.

I had this problem once. There was a pinhole leak in the cooling coils on the back of the refrigerator that was likely caused by bumping it when we moved it to our new house. The repair guy found the leak, fixed it, and refilled the freon for about $75.

Also, don't run the refrigerator as long as it's not cooling. If there is no or low freon in the system, it could burn out the compressor. If that happens, you're looking at a repair cost that could be so high that you might as well buy a new refrigerator.

The self defrosting system may not be working, or functioning properly. Let it thaw out good for 24 hours with the door proped open. While you wait, make sure the drain is clear, and see if water is dripping into the underneath drain pan. When you put it back in service, and it cools again, but then quits in a day or two, then have someone check the defrost timer and heaters, along with all the controls.

check the fan at the bottom by the coils, is it running? if not that may be the problem, feel the pipes coming out of the compressor, are they cold , or hot ? clean the coils, call GE it may still be under warranty
