Some people who are jealous or just don't see a need for higher education invented Piled etc.
Actually stands for "doctor" but could be a mailorder "degree" of a doctor of "Divinity".

I've heard that, based on the fact that a B.S. stands for you-know-what, and an M.S. is more of that. In the off-chance that you seriously believe that this is what it stands for, the actual meaning is Doctor of Philosophy (the form in Latin reverses the doctor and the philosophy).
