Hold your foot over the bathtub, and pour the hydrogen peroxide over the toe - you should be essentially rinsing it. Try to irritate the nail bed as little as possible. It will sting but that's ok. You'll also see it "bubble" - that's normal. Once you've rinsed it a few times, dry it with a clean cotton ball, put Neosporin on it, and bandage it. Try to keep the foot elevated a bit until it has a chance to form a good scab over the damaged area. You may see some drainage for the firts day or two; that's also normal. Keep it clean; change the bandage at least twice a day, and keep an eye open for infection. Should infection occur, see your doctor IMMEDIATELY.

Good luck.

Get your story straight. First you say you're cleaning your toe with hydrogen peroxide and then you want to know if it will hurt if you put hydrogen peroxide on it.

You don't need hydrogen peroxide. All you need is to carefully wash the wound with clean water and put on a dressing large enough to completely cover the wound and extend beyond it. You probably don't need the neosporin ointment. If it's been used, it may have been contaminated with germs and could make the wound worse.

After cleaning with clean water and bandaging the toe, you need to protect it further. Wearing a shoe may irritate and cause more pain and bleeding. Leave it off and wear open-toed foot gear until the wound heals. If it does develop an infection, you will see increased redness, swelling and pain within the next 24- 36 hours, in which case you'll need to see your doctor.

not to worry-- you'll be okay before too long-- we're so used to having our nails on, so when we loose one it's really creepy. sounds like you're taking the right steps to take care of it.. peroxide kills the germs, be sure to let it dry out in between. neosporin is good too, just pamper your toe and try not to bump it on anything. it will take quite a while but your new nail will eventually grow back out. it probably hurts more when you look at it right? just try to take deep breaths and you'll be fine.

lana s is correct. Unless you notice some complications in a few hours/days (e.g., infection), all you get to do is wait (and keep it out of harm's way). The nail will grow again.

The neosporin is OK as a preventative measure but it will not be enough if it gets infected.

That happened to my friend. Not to worry, the nail will grow back. The skin will harden up soon enough and it won't hurt anymore.

You've done it all right so don't worry. But i would say see a doctor because it could get infected.
