At this point in history, I would say no. There is too much diversity, and too little understanding in the world right now for this to really work. And can you imagine "battle" for power, resources and representation? It would be a logistical nightmare to even try something like that. Also, I think it could limit economic, scientific and technological growth, which is often fueled by competition between nations. Maybe at some point in the distant future this could happen, but not now.

Now the only way it could happen now, is if some science fiction stuff happened, like making contact with intelligent alien beings, and the masses were aware that we are not alone in the universe. This would unite the human race as one, because we would need to stand together to compete with the non-earthlings and possibly protect ourselves against them. Kinda like how when you have a family of people who fight all the time and seem like they hate each other, but if someone from the outside attacks one of them, then they all come together to fight the outsider. I think this is the premise of Star Trek. =)

It can't even be considered. It's absolutely impossible. One entity cannot speak for all the human beings on this planet. There is too much variation. Cultural, religious, geographic, biologic, racial, spiritual, physiologic, ideologic, financial, and technological variation make this idea nearly impossible. You'd have to have a massive establishment with representatives from each of these cultures to even make a go of it, and the conflicts of interest between the groups would make the whole process so inefficient that there would be constant uprisings and chaos. Such a government would essentially lead to anarchy.

Gross. No. Never.

The world is gigantic, and filled with people of competing interests on a national level, let alone a global one. A world government would be so ridiculously inefficient that it would last a year before running out of money. It would cost so much money to administer it would lead to worldwide poverty. The interests of the countries would be in constant struggle and would have no redress. It would not work.

HELL NO, unless you want to live the rest of your life like a slave.

The one world government would be put in place to benefit only those who are involved with it - not the ordinary people like you and me.

With most of the world lacking the basic freedoms that only a small number of the world enjoy, you can be sure that a one world government will all but dissolve our human freedom.

All is explained why here:

Nope. Bad idea. The co-mingling of that many diverse cultures would never run smoothly. Look how screwed up the UN is. They can't decide what color to paint the bathrooms let alone tackle problems like Durfur, the Sudan, Zimbabwe etc. It would be a colossal mess!

Because one leader can all of a sudden decide to kill all the blue-eyed people in the world, and it happens. Or to exclusively tax everyone who drives a pickup, or other wild things like that.

That's a roundabout way of saying too much power consolidated in one place is a bad thing. Besides, each country has its own unique features, unique people groups, and other things that are exclusive to that country. A leader should be a local one who (theoretically) understands what his or her people needs.

Yes,

A one world government would ensure that everybody everywhere would be ruled by the same laws. There would be no wars and no everybody would look out for everybody else as we would all think of each other as our own.

[edited to add] the folks above seem to think that a one world government would exist within the context of our current political divisions. That would not, could not be the case. The constitution of such a government would be akin to that of a Federal government with local states tweaking the laws to reflect local conditions/needs.

Good: less scope for war, easier to identify who was in charge.

Bad: much harder for individuals to every enter the corridors of power (think how many billions of people there are in relation toone governing cabinet), bad decisions and philosophies would affect the entire world, much easier for despots or autocrats to impose controlling social systems on the populace at large, loss of individual national identities.

I think if you removed the words "by one government," your questionwould be even more acute...what is government and whose purposes does it serve? Not mine!

Why: It would simplify trade, monetary exchange, reduce the likelihood of war, reduce the proliferation of weapons, The savings that most countries would enjoy by reducing eliminating their standing military would would create a incredible surplus, many debts could be resolved, resources could be distributed without tariffs and most economies would benefit. I could go on and on with benefits.

There is one problem. Who gets to govern? Thats the one problem we will probably never resolve without the mother of all wars to solve it.
