fighting tradition is very hard
There christian church tried to do away with paganism, voodoo and other old religions -- but they survive.

Celebrations unite communities, standing around a big fire watching fireworks go off around us, makes us feel good.

as well as November the 5th, there are religious festivals that involve Fire, all over the world. Like burning of viking longships in Orkney, Shetland and Scandinavia or other festival like the Day of the Dead, orThe Solstices .

Bringing the community together, Religion, tourism or big companies making money. what ever the reason, we seem to like standing watching the fire

Because a few fires and fireworks once a year has little effect on global warming in comparison with the 1000 new cars joining the streets of Beijing everyday or the millions of tonnes of coal being burnt to produce power. It is a age old tradition to celebrate this day and everyone is entitled to have a bit of fun. I am not saying your point is invalid just that is the least of our problems in this world!

The fireworks are to celebrate that he did not succeed (they just have gunpowder as this is fit considering his plan) - we are hardly promoting terrorism by burning his effigy!
