It's an older truck, automatic transmission. When I put it in drive, it will occasionally stay in low gear for awhile. At first it wasn't really a problem because it only happened when the truck had been left to set for awhile, but now it happens all the time. Is my transmission shelling out? or is it just a part that I can replace?

There is a diaphragm on the side of the transmission that senses vacuum/pressure from the intake manifold. If this diaphragm is failed, it may be the cause of your problem. If that is the case it is like a $30 fix that you should be able to do yourself.
