contrary to what everyone says, japan is not completely crowded, it has suburbs and a countryside, too. its like saying New York (the state) is crowded. anyway, this is an open ended question, so here are some key facts about japan:
-the summers are HOT and humid; winters FREEZING and lots of snow
-trains and subways are the main means of transportation; i would definately not reccomend riding either during rush hour; even if you live in the suburbs.
-generally things are more expensive than here in america
-before you enter almost any home, school, or medical building, there is a place where you MUST remove your shoes
-the people are friendly; if you see someone who needs any kind of help, it is an obligation to help them

Japan is a hectic & crowded place. Especially Tokyo and most of the major cities. The public transportation service is very advanced and easy to understand. If you get on the trains to go somewhere you will be met with lots of people. However it is an eerie feeling since it is so quiet in the trains. With so many people in the trains, not many people speak. Most of the time it is the 'foreigner' who is speaking to someone. But in the eerie silence they soon stop speaking because you get noticed. Each person is in their own world with their cell phone texting, reading, listen to the Ipods, MP3's or simply zoned out. People are friendly to strangers but it is a practiced art. The kindness and politeness is an automated response with very little if any feelings. Unless you are some celebrity people don't show any feelings. Sounds like a zombie world? You just have to immerse yourself into the culture. Then you really start to experience the real Japanese. They are like any other culture with lots of emotion, happiness, sadness, etc. There are no words to describe it. If I wrote a book about that it will be several volumes. HOLD ON there you may have given me an IDEA!
Thank you for giving me an idea! and your Q
EDIT
TokyoE I am willing to correspond with you if you allow emails. We can discuss various view points. Thanks

If you're going to visit school there, this can be a excellent enjoy. You can attend a western school that stresses Japanese language and be trained your different topics in English. Going to university and making peers you're going to have the language down very quickly. Japan is plenty of a laugh and there are lots of matters to look and do. Are you seeing that going? Is so, any detailed discipline?

Thats a really open ended question. Whats it like to live anywhere?
Japan is a large country! People there live like most other places in the world. You go to work, go to school, meet friends, run errands, just every day stuff.
For trains being quiet with so many people, ride many commuter trains in the USA, sometimes full with 700 people, and its usually quiet, no one talking people minding their own business. Ride on an airplane most people don't talk to other people. So I don't see how that is just a Japanese thing when I observe it in other countries and places as well.
Back to life in Japan, people are just living, I don't really know how to answer the question. Maybe you want to be more specific like "how's school in Japan" , or "How is working for a Japanese company" then more specific answers can be made, then generic hows life question.

It is the best country in the world! Gosh, I felt happy and free and I made a lot of friends. Japan has the best food in the world, prettiest women, nicest guys, and is so very liberating. Try it for a year. Like me, you'll regret it if you return!

Clean, safe, comfortable, crowded, expensive, rules-oriented, expensive, crowded, expensive again, and then more crowded. Getting out of the city is difficult. It makes you miss the lifestyle and wide open spaces of America.
