actually,I worked a s a manager at an AA clubhouse for years, and we always did a thanksgiving dinner for the local AA community, which at any given time included a whole group of active, usually homeless drunks.we fed anyone who came through the door...and we also fed a lot of them throughout the year, too. We also would buy em smokes for thanksgiving.I think most of those guys were happier about that than the food.
EDIT:it occurs to me,most people dont realize how many homeless have addiction problems...and the holidays are a HUGE trigger for addicts trying not to drink or drug.the other thing that was more important than food was an OPEN DOOR.we stayed open24 hrs both holidays, and ran meetings every 1-1/2 hours.keep that coffee comin!

I volunteered at a church in the community a few years back that served/delivered Thanksgiving dinner for anyone needing a meal in the community, I really enjoyed it. My family was far away and my husband was working. It was a blessing to me as much as to those who got the meal. Now my church does this also, but lately I've been able to be with my family and haven't got to be there.

It's wonderful that so many people give their time over the Holidays. However, I've always either done shift work or have had very flexible time......so I purposely choose to avoid serving during the Holidays. I'm far more likely to be serving a meal at the homeless shelter, or donating to Seniors or the local food banks during February, or June, or September...:)

Added in edit: Before our base closed, we used to invite members of the military to join us for our Thanksgiving Dinner, usually 2 or 3 each year. This year, we will have at least two people who don't have family locally to join us.

Yes, the last church I was a member at we had these meals for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have also taken my kids and gone down and served meals at the soup kitchen on thanksgiving for the experience of giving and the joy received in doing so.

We're putting together baskets to take to families so they can cook their own meal. We do that every year. Some year I should go to the rescue mission and help serve Thanksgiving or christmas dinner. We always seem to be so busy cooking our own meal and celebrating with family.

I have always wanted to do that. I think it would be the most rewarding gift anyone could give another. To be served when you are down and out by a smiling face... how awesome. I don't know why I never did it. I guess the family monopolizes my entire day on Thanksgiving.

Yes, our church does it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I will try to volunteer for one of the holidays to serve food and help clean up. Then go home and do the same.

We also deliver meals to shut-ins on the different holidays. There is nothing more satisfying to see the faces as we drop by with goodies (including gifts).

Yes, we serve at teh Long Beach Rescue Mission, Long Beach, CA. We like to serve on days outside of Holidays, cause they said everyone else like to volunteer on Holidays. They mostly need help the rest of the yr.

It's very rewarding.
