Today it's necessary to have a set of shallow well metric sockets and a ratchet wrench. For most small under-hood jobs a 3/8 drive set is fine. For tougher brake, suspension, cap-screws and bolts you'll need a 1/2" drive set of metric sockets and 1/2" drive ratchet handle. If your on a budget Sears stuff is warranted for ever. Auto Zone's premium sockets and hand tools are supposed to be made by snap-on. 12 point sockets are stronger and handier than 6 point.
If you can spring for the very best tools S&K can't be beat.

Permium screwdrivers will have a black tip on the end. It's hard to beat Klein screwdrivers- slotted, Phillips, posi-drive, Torx and others.

Go to Sears, find the oldest guy in the tool department, ask him if he is a car guy or a woodworker.
You want the car guy... he will be able to get you started with what you need, and give you a list for future purchases

If you know what you are looking at, a pawn shop has the best buys on used tools, and tools don't really wear out but check the racheting action.
