Being a multi-cultural country, we've got street lighting up which helped celebrate Eid, and is now celebrating Diwali, and will stay up for Christmas. However, it doesn't stay lit all the time. There is a break between each festival.
If you want to put up Thanksgiving decorations in America, that's fine. It kind of denegrates the birth of Christ if you just turn Christmas into an extension of what is essentially a harvest festival.
In order to show due reverence for Christ, the celebration ought to begin just before the day, and finish on Twelfth Night, when the story ends.
Any celebrations outside that time are purely commercial razzamatazz, and are an insult to the true meaning of Christ's birth day.

I wait until first week of December and don't put my tree up until a week before Christmas.
ps: Most people don't realize this and just think it's a abbreviation for Christmas but XMAS has a much deeper meaning. It was devised by the atheists back in the 60's to remove Christ from Christmas hence the "X" striking Christ from Christmas and what is Christmas really without Christ.
My two cents.

I used to put them up the day after Thanksgiving, but I always felt that I had barely put them up when it was time to take them down again. For all that hassle, I want to enjoy them as long as possible!
I don't think having Christmas decorations up in any way infringes on Thanksgiving. Christmas is one of the things I am thankful for! So I'm going to put them up as soon as I clean my living room, which I'm going to get to right after the kitchen, since a bunch of kitchen stuff is in the living room (from cleaning out the kitchen cabinets)
Of course, if it takes me until Thanksgiving to clean both the kitchen and living room, it's all out the window.
Next year, right after Halloween, for sure!
Edit: I want to say that I am kinda shocked at the vehemence of some of these answers. People who think differently are "nutters" "crazy" and lots of comments about how it's just not done? Good grief, how much unneccesary stress and misery is in the world because of attitudes like that? I can see waiting until after Halloween since that 's a completely different theme, but Thanksgiving is along similar lines in the spirit, if not the story. If you are stuck living amongst rigid people, just do the inside of your house now and the outside after Thanksgiving. So they won't be offended by your desire to do what's best for your family and all. For heaven's sake, there is SO MUCH to do for the Xmas season - parties, presents, pageants, etc., I need to get those inside decorations (apartment - can't decorate outside) up asap so I can give the other stuff my full attention!

No, no, no, no and no again, they go up in December not November. It is obscenely grotesque to put them up now. I am not being a miserable sod but I think the 1st of December until the 6th of January is quite long enough. Not only that the poor tree will have long died and dropped all of its needles by Christmas day if you get one now! Love Christmas and the decorations but there is a limit to which I will take it. Even the trashiest family in my street wait until very late November before they drag out their glowing Santa and disco light Reindeer.

I'm with you, mine go up next weekend. We do an extensive display both inside and outside and it will take us until Thanksgiving to get everything up. Besides, I like to have the holiday decorations and the spirit of the season in my home for Thanksgiving celebrations. That way people who don't see us at Christmas get to enjoy it at Thanksgiving.

None of my family will put up their decorations prior to Thanksgiving. My Grandparents said its bad luck to put up any decorations before Thanksgiving or to take them down before New Years.

No! Way too early! Apart from all the other good answers, think of the dust they'll collect by the big day! Don't tell me, you've got all your Christmas shopping done as well!
