I have a 216 inline six engine with a Carter carb. It is in a 1941 Chevy Coupe. The engine was running a couple months ago. I noticed the bulb would not fill up so I have checked the fuel pump. On the outgoing side of the pump fuel seems to flow but maybe there's not enough pressure. There is a vacuum device under the distributor. What is that part? How does it work? I took off the hose that leads from that little vacuum to the carb. There is no pressure or suction out of it when the car is starting with starting fluid. Could this be the problem or do I just have a weak fuel pump? If it is a bad fuel pump is it better to replace or repair? Thanks for all advise.

I talked to a guy that said it could be a clogged fuel line from the pump to the gas tank. Still looking for more answers.

The vacuum piece on the distributor changes the ignition timing as RPMs go up, nothing to do with your problem..

If you have gas coming out of the fuel pump, the pump is ok.

That glass bulb thing on the front of the carb, is a fuel filter .

Make sure there is not an obstruction in the fuel line.
Clean the fuel filter, blow into the inlet side, (yes, with your mouth-don't inhale) if you cannot easily get gas or air out of the outlet --the filter is plugged.
Next check to make sure the float and inlet valve aren't stuck closed( you'll need to take the top off the carb)

If you get this far--then rebuild the carb...

AS to repair or replace-- always repair if you can get parts....
