I drank Castor Oil when I had my daughter. My husband was home on leave from Iraq and was scheduled to leave on Sunday. I had an amnio done on Tuesday and the doctors said that while he lungs were mature, they were at the lower end of mature and that they did not feel that they should induce. I didn't agree with them. I felt that since I was 37 weeks pregnant that she would be fine. And she was!! I drank 2 oz mixed with 2 oz of orange juice at 8:30 pm Wednesday night. I didn't have any diarrhea, but I did vomit like 5 times in an hour. Nothing I hadn't dealt with before :-) it was like the morning sickness I had in the beginning!! I woke up at 5:20 am Thursday morning and my water had broke. I went to the hospital and delivered my daughter at 3:32 pm. She was healthy then and is healthy today. She didn't have a single problem with her breathing, and she weighted in at a healthy 7 lbs. 0.9 oz.
I am due with my second child, a boy, on Christmas day. I am still undecided if I will use castor oil. I have nothing against it, but I don't feel the enormous sense of urgency that I did when I had my daughter.

Well I never drank castor oil. I have read that it can be dangerous. But what I did do with castor oil. Then suggested to my friend this past summer also. Was to put a little castor oil directly on my cervix (I read this in a pregnancy magazine somewhere). I broke my water within 12 hours. My friend went into labor with 20 hours. Not sure if it actually worked for us or if it was just time.
Good luck

My personal experiences with castor oil relate to my professional experience as a labor nurse, and I have seen way too many women who have taken this and not gone into labor, but have gotten very very ill, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydrated. Seen some stressed out babies as a result too, babies who had meconium aspiration and respiratory problems.
Castor oil is not effective in starting labor. Women who took it and then labor happened soon after cannot tell you without a doubt that labor wouldn't have happened anyway without it! Furthermore, you should never take any medication for a purpose of inducing labor without consulting your doctor and getting their professional opinion. Not too many doctors will ever condone taking castor oil for attempting labor induction.
At best, castor oil doesn't work. At worst, it can be dangerous. Don't do it.

There are different methods to inspire hard work to begin. The technology in the back of taking a laxative (similar to castor oil) is that having a bowel motion releases progesterone on your frame. This hormone softens the cervix, and would possibly aid your frame cross into hard work -- IF it is in a position. Your caregiver will thanks for now not utilizing castor oil, as it's effortless to overdo. And you realize what overdone laxatives do (primary diarrhea!) Try taking a stroll, consuming traditional meals so that you can preserve your bowels relocating, and maintaining up in your water. And calm down -- your frame and your child will come whilst it is time.

It can make you very sick with diarrhea, cramps and vomiting and put you in danger of dehydration. It can also cause an early bowel movement in the fetus, thus expelling meconium into the amniotic fluid, which can be harmful to the baby.
Oh yeah, and it doesn't cause you to go into labor.
Most women take it around their due date, or when they are overdue, so how can they prove it was the castor oil? It's just a coincidence.
If it worked so great, why aren't doctors using it in hospitals instead of pitocin??

I have tried it several times because all 6 of my babies were late!
My advice: skip the castor oil. You're not that desperate. All it
will do is give you the runs and a raw butt, on top of 'rhoids and just the irritation of having to run to the can every 3 minutes.
Believe me, your baby will come when your body is ready to deliver. Nothing will change that (nothing natural anyway)

i personally do not have experience with castor oil but have heard that if it doesn't put you into labor it can get through the placenta and cause your baby to have a bowl movement. Which would be bad because your baby sucks the fluid in around it which would contain the bowl movement.
