Transfer via any portable media, (Flash-drives are probably best) or put all your files that you want to transfer on the external drive and then shift them to the "C" of the new computer. The easiest way is to right-click on the file you want to move, that will give you a drop-down that has the option "send to", and from that you can select the storage device you are using to transfer files. Fill the storage device, then transfer it to your new computer's USB port, open it, and repeat the process, this time selecting the appropriate destination folder in your new computer. Repeat as necessary. Simple, eh? I've done it many times.

There are a few programs that will do it for you. I can't recall what they are right now, sorry, but if you search either pcworld.com or pcmag.com, both of them had those programs reviewed.
Also, I would suggest reinstalling all the programs instead of moving them. It will clean up you system and will give you a fresh start.
As for all the files - try just drag/drop it from one folder to another, since you have both computers connected. It might take some time, but it'll be the direct transfer and probably the easiest way.

You've more or less answered your own question. You've got an external hard drive, so put your stuff on that and then connect the external hard drive to new computer and copy the stuff onto C drive from the external hard drive

If u dont mind removing ur PC cabin. Take Hard disk of your old PC. Connect to IDE or SATA cable of your new PC. Make ur old Hdisk as slave( just remove the jumper from the rear end). Now boot ur PC. Vista will detect your new drive. If u had 3 partition (C,d,e) before new partion will be added (f,g) . Now simply copy paste.

Vista has something called Easy Transfer. It can transfer all of your user accounts, emails, files, etc. from XP to Vista. Read about it here:
