Could the switch itself be bad? Once in a blue moon it will start using the button, otherwise I have to push start. What else could be causing my problem?

It does have a kick stand kill switch. It doesn't make any noise when I hit the button except when it occasionally works. I will try cleaning the contacts, I never thought of that. Thanks.

Open up the switch to determine the wire colors that the starter button connect.
Then follow the switch's wire down to where it plugs into the wire harness.
With the key on, jump those 2 wires together.
If the starter works, replace the switch.
If not, further investigation is required.

Does the engine turn over when you push the button?

Does the engine make any sounds at all when you do this?

It there's no sould at all, not even a 'click', then it's defintely the contacts. Disassemble and clean everything in the starter switch, that should do the trick!

The Ninja 250 is consistently rated as one of the best beginner bikes around. It can handle the highway, but it will be tossed a bit, as will any other bike. I wouldn't recommend riding on the highway any time soon; you need to get a strong feel for the bike before you try the highway. Another option would be the slightly larger Ninja 500R (older models are called the EX500). Still a good beginner bike, but a little more substantial. Try a few different bikes and see what feels comfortable. Fell will be among the most important factors. You need to feel comfortable and secure on a bike. Good luck!

Water got into my handlebar switches, and turned the contacts in there all green. Taking apart the switches, scraping off the green, and wiping down the contacts made them work again.

take it apart and clean the contacts and if that dont work replace the switch. cheap way out is to run the wiring to a toggle switch.
