The best workers will be rewarded with the highest paying jobs, leaving the poor-quality workers in the lowest paying ones. This argument tends to work fairly well in regards to professional jobs (for instance, the best doctors will be paid the best in their industry), but not so well in unskilled positions (there's no real incentive for companies to pay well to attract the best cash operators as they can easily replace staff with other unskilled employees).

So, if you believe in a self-regulating market, the minimum wage just sets incomes at arbitrary levels. If, on the other hand, you believe in government regulation, the minimum wage protects the most vulnerable workers.

The minimum wage stops the owners of businesses making as much profit as they can and offers a small degree of protection to the poor. If you believe that the minority of people (rich elites) should be able to do what they like to the poor - as the US does - then the minimum wage is a barrier to that.
