The answer depends on what traditional programs you are talking about. Here are four categories of MBA programs for you to think about:

1. Elite programs (ranked roughly 1-15). These programs are expensive -- but worth it. Typical graduates have three or four job offers at six figure salaries. Graduates are able to change fields easily after getting a degree.

2. Ranked programs not in the top 15. These programs will allow graduates to get a big bump in pay after graduating. They will be able to switch fields. Their pay won't be as high as at the elite schools, and some of the best companies will not recruit at these schools. But the programs are worth it. Many of these schools are state universities -- so they are a bargain if you are from that state.

3. MBA programs at non-ranked brick&mortar universities. To be honest, most of these schools will not help you get a better job or higher pay. They may help you get ahead in your current job -- but don't do much more for you. If you go full time, the benefits of getting the MBA are probably not worth the salary that you are givnig up. If your current company is paying for it -- the overall benefits may be positive. An MBA degree from one of these schools will not hurt you in getting a new job -- it just won't help all tha tmuch.

4. Online MBA programs. you might just as well get the words "I have a bad education" tattooed on your forehead. The effect will be the same and the cost will be less. These "MBAs" are not respected. Many potential employers will just toss your resume when they see where you got your MBA. My feeling is that these degrees actually have a negative effect on your earning potential.

There is no question that employers far prefer the traditional format. If you must do an online program, do one that is connected to a traditional school, rather than one which is seen as a commercial enterprise's version of an MBA.

Online MBA's are useless according to employers. Unless your MBA is from a top rated school, rather than a state school, its not going to impress employers either.
