Well first, it wouldn't be rock, it would be Pop. And although the Osmonds as a group, may have influenced future groups, such as New Kids on the Block, teen boy bands were not invented by the Osmonds. And, they themselves were just one of many at the time, such as the Jackson 5.

As for Donny and Marie, the only reason you say the two names in the same sentence is because of the Donny and Marie variety show. And the influence for that, came from shows such as Sonny and Cher, not the other way around.

That was my attempt at a serious answer to an obviously "not to be taken serious" question.

Being a Mormon or knowing one has nothing to do with anything. But as to wearing magic underwear, it was not that, nor even just the diet. It was the 6 hours a day plus that each of them put in to learn the dance steps. If you notice, all of the professional dancers are thin; working out like they do means lots of energy expounded and weight loss. Marie is a phony and said she used the special diet. I was a Nutrisystem's counselor, and the food wasn't the trick...it was a combination of what they eat and what movements they do. They cannot sit on a couch, watch TV and eat Nurtrisystems foods and lose weight. She told many lies, even about her passing out...told at least 4 different reasons why she fainted. Also said she couldn't be on the last show, because she had to be with her "sick" son, who went into a treatment facility, but she sure is all over the TV now. Hmmm. Did son get better that quickly, and not need her support anymore? Oh, well, she has to live with herself and we all need to know that celebrities sometimes believe their own publicists.

They were, of course.

Just look at this as part of the overwhelming evidence:

In 1976, Donny and Marie Osmond stare goofily into camera and warble:

"When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle in the sky—
In the mist of a memory you wander back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh"...

And magically a hard rock group rips off the first line to name itself Deep Purple!

Ditto, Marie sings 'I'm a little bit country', and Donny sings 'I'm a little bit rock-n-roll'. And lo and behold, a Led Zep tune called "Rock-n-Roll" appears!*

Coincidence, or just the world bowing to the incredible brilliance of these Mormons?

OK, don't answer that...

They showed modern rock bands exactly what NOT to do. When a band isn't sure if what they are doing is going to help them in the long run, they consider "What would Donny and Marie do?" Then, they do the opposite. It has helped keep many bands on track, and not compromise their music.

I still have a cordless "Donnie and Marie" microphone. Innovators in their own time. And Marie, well , if she can make up my walk without breaking a hip or something, can come to my house anytime.

There is only one true path to Paradise by the Dashboard Light. All others are heretics and impostures.

The three that are one. Meatloaf, Jim Steinman, and Ellen Foley.
