Due to it's geographical location in the Middle East. They went there to destabilize it for occupation.

So what if we went there for oil. Who cares? If that is true, why don't I see pre-2000 prices at the pumps?
Let's see. Why did Iraq get chosen? Hmmm. Could it have something to do with the fact that Iraq under Saddam had ties to terrorism (Ansar-Al Islam), they funded terrorist activities against Israel ($25,000 a pop to homicide bombers), they protected one of the nut jobs responsible for the 1993 WTC bombing, they were in violation of the Gulf War Cease Fire (cease fire does NOT mean the war has ended it only means that hostilities are placed on hold), during the period of sanctions they fired on coalition planes patrolling the No Fly Zone (that in itself should have been grounds to lift the Cease Fire).
Those are just a few of the reasons...

It was a country with a history of invading its neighbors, a country that supported international terrorism, a country that had used WMDs against its own citizens and people in other countries, a country that was thought to be secretly in possession of WMDs, a country with a leader with a fanatical hatred of the USA and its allies in the region.
Add that up and that makes the the number 1 candidate Iraq.

Iraq was politically isolated, it had no strong allies willing to come to it's aid, militarily, economically, or diplomatically, so it could be attacked (in theory) without dire international consequences - or, at least, with potentially fewer and less severe consequences than attacking any other terrorist-supporting Arab state.

We put all the unstable nations names on ping pong balls, and Iraq was the one that came out winner on the stabilization lottery.
Another answer is, we went to war there, made certain promises to rebuild the place so we aren't re-hated when we leave. We are following through.

Because it is strategic to the primary goal of moving on Iran. We have a strong presence in every country around Iran now. Once we have permanent bases and assigned forces on those bases, Iran will be totally surrounded. First you make a noose, then you tighten it, and that noose is almost complete.
Ah, but wait... Iran did boast of activating their goal of 3,000 nuclear reactors capable of producing weapons grade plutonium. How much weapons grade plutonium do you think can be produced in short order on that scale? How many more reactors do you think they plan to activate to achieve their goals? As soon as they attempt to tighten that noose, it will be hell on earth.

We were already spending billions to enforce the NO FLY ZONES to control him since 1991.
He didn't listen to over 10 years of diplomacy ,so he learned a hard lesson.
