It isn't common at all in the US, very rare in fact. It's nitrous oxide, aka laughing gas, what they give at dentists' offices. The gas is too concentrated on it's own, and mixed with air that is breathed in through a mask. It goes into the blood stream, and will cross the placenta to the baby just as would any IV narcotic pain medications.

It's generally considered to not be as effective as narcotics and many women can get very dizzy and disoriented from it, which isn't fun when you're laboring and wanting to remember and experience your child's birth.

Laughing gas, like what dentists use. I've never heard of women in labor using this, and have never been told about it or offered it at any hospital. It can kind of make you "silly" which would not be a good thing during the serious work of labor and delivery.

It's basically laughing gas mixed with oxygen. As soon as you breathe it in it makes you feel like your drunk, and as soon as you take the mouthpiece away it stops.

Takes the edge off of contractions.
