An easier way is to say 10% of 49 =4.9
1/2 of 10% =5% so 1/2 of 4.9 =2.45
If you get into this habit of breaking mathematics down, you can do them in your head.
In UK we have 17 1/2% VAT. Frightening?----No!
10%+5%+2 1/2% =17.5%-------Easy.
