I sometimes wonder that myself.

I don't think it would be wise to BAN things made in China all together. Many of the companies importing things to the United States are owned by corporations elsewhere, and banning the imports from China wouldn't do any good. They would just move the factories to other areas with cheap labor and low standards and import them from the new locations. There are also companies that make good products, and an overall ban would hurt them too.
I think that our government and the businesses selling the products should do a better job of testing toys for lead and other contaminates before allowing them to be sold. There are actually very few people working for our government testing products. Most products are tested by outside sources and Consumer Protection groups. Sometimes this works, but many times dangerous items slip through or make it to market completely untested.
In the meantime, parents can buy lead test kits and test the toys your children play with. The kits aren't completely accurate, but they are usually accurate enough to sense the presence of dangerous lead levels. If you are concerned about specific toys, return them to the stores you bought them from. Many stores are accepting returns and will help check for recalls on those products.

Do you mean ban? Hard to say, so many things are made overseas now. "Made in the USA" is becoming quickly less common than it used to be. Mostly because things made here in the States are likely to cost a lot more than something made in China. Why? Cheap labor for one. A laborer in China makes about $50 a month. Here in the US, a factory worker might make $2000 in a month. Fewer government standards, labor laws and less competition also is a factor.

Hm. Band. Band China. This couldn't be a slight amount of ignorance, could it be? Look. Mattel, for example, out sourced production to China. Mattel is STILL responsible for its products. A lot of Americans are frying french fries now because Mattel out sourced its work, and they couldn't even handle quality control. Mattel apologized to China for letting them take the heat for the screw up, but maybe you didn't get that email. Lately, food produced in America by Americans has been banned over and over, but you aren't suggesting we eat only imported food, are you? Should we buy only imported cars because of the huge number of recalls of American cars every other month?
The real culprit here is the corporate mentality that making money is more important than the well being of the citizens of the country the corporation is in. If Mattel, GM, and the big food conglomerates gave a bean for America, instead of making 18 trillion dollars this month they would address employment and welfare issues in America and settle for 17 1/2 trillion instead. It's so easy to blame the damn foreigners, though.

Bad idea.
First, where else am I gonna get cheap toys for my kids?
Are you going to also do something with all of the dangerous exports that the US sends out? After all...it's only fair! Take a look at http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/09/cpsc_exports.html
And are you saying that China doesn't care about the dangerous exports ? They EXECUTE people for that over there! Take a look at http://consumerist.com/consumer/severe-punishment-train/is-china-going-to-execute-lead+toy-vendors-287852.php
Or is your complaints just a way to push up the "Made in America" nonsense and support overpaid union workers?
Just a few thoughts...

Made in the USA is always my first choice and is what I look for. If something cost a little more and is made here I will buy it over the cheaper foreign made product in a heartbeat. Same goes for my cars. I only buy American, I've had several cars but my favorite is the Mustang I had that was made here in Michigan. It was actually "walked" down the line by the first owners brother.

The products in the news that you mention are all sold by American companies. They are manufactured in China.
the American companies are at least as culpable because, while I am sure they specify the products must meet specific US safety requirements, they don't do sufficient quality assurance to verify the contract was actually done.
Frankly, the lack of QA is what bothers me more.
Why aren't we seeing the heads of toy company CEOs roll on this?

It is narrow minded to believe that it is even concievable to ban any small percentage of all the things that are imported from China. I feel that it is the duty of the American companies that produce goods to ensure that their products are safe. the chinese don't have the same kinds of standards as America for a good reason but by no limiting the imports ourselves we are acting as enablers.

Because China now makes all the things that used to be made in the US which is why US industry has collapsed.
The big US corporations use chinese labor because it is cheaper.
No American is willing to work for such low wages.
