the mom of a friend of mine was asking how cold Minnesota really was. She figured the green color on the map (a political map; so each state had a different color) was the warm part, and the blue part (Lake Superior) was the cold part.

She also realized that Canada was north of the eastern US, but didn't realize it went as far west as it did. She figured there was "just water" north of Montana.

I'm from romania. when i went to canada for a 3-week holiday i met some canadians ( no more then 5 actually) who didn't know where europe is.

Also, when i went to germany i met one who didn't know where Austria was.

Also i see some of my friends are getting dumber by the minute in regards to geography in general ( friends that are still in school where geography is mandatory).

In 8th grade, my best friend got up in front of the class and had to speak about the state Arkansas. She actually called it "ar-Kansas!"

Also, my sister thought the state of Washington and Washington D.C. were one-and-the-same while she was in high school.

I love Geography and enjoy these stories. Great question!

Not knowing where places are does not mean you are bad at geography. Geography is more than just knowing the location of cities or knowing where people are from.

That being said I have had people that at first couldn't grasp how one part of a continent can be older than another part. I also had a high school friend that thought it was Oreo-Graphic rainfall.

I don't have to share any stories. Just browse some of the questions here and you can find **plenty** of shocking examples of geographical ignorance. The prize-winner for today (IMO) is the person who asked how many of the U.S. states were north of the Tropic of Capricorn. <>

My brother, for the longest time, thought that Russia was China on maps and globes for some dumb reason.

This is hilarious that you asked this question, because when my wife and I went to Jamaica for our 5th anniversary, she thought we were flying all the way to Africa.
