My sister smokes cigarettes. She wants to stop smoking but is very addicted. She says it's the only time she sits down to relax and doesn''t feel like she has an excuse to sit down and relax if she's not smoking.

Yes, I've tried explaining how we all deserve to sit down and rest, etc. She's 28 and understands it's HORRIBLE for her and that's why she wants to quit.

She asked me to find out what homeopathics or herbs she can take to assist with this.

Do you know?

The most effective thing (and the only thing that worked for me) was smoking coltsfoot. (I smoked a pack a day for over 10 years) It used to be smoked as a treatment for asthma (really!). Smoking a couple of rolled coltsfoot "cigarettes" still gives you something to puff on, something in there really helps with the "nic fits", it opens up the capillaries and cleans out your lungs, and gives you something to do with your hands (rolling the cigarette). After a few days, you find that the cravings are gone, and rolling up the coltsfoot is more trouble than its worth and you quit smoking those, too. That's when you realize, you have quit smoking.

This is the only thing that worked for me and I tried:
Lozenges, gum, patches, hypnosis, aromatherapy, Buddy quitting, journaling, sheer will power, etc. etc.

By the way, coltsfoot is perfectly safe for smoking and has no side effects...it is an all natural herb and can be found at www.mountainroseherbs.com for a very reasonable price

Edit --- Hi, I didn't know you were a homeopathy fan. There is no denying that homeopathy has a very strong placebo effect, and that might be perfect to get your sister through that rough first week. Whatever method she chooses, I wish her the best of luck.

The problem with homeopathics and herbs in this area is that they will not stop the psychological addiction. You can find an herbal detox product that will help cleanse the body of toxins, but the primary issue to deal with is the extreme psychological addiction at the moment.

I am an alcoholic, and spent a great deal of time addicted to alcohol. What I needed to do was to change my behaviors, and that was something that herbs did not help me do. Nor did church, therapy or for that matter, a number of hospitalizations.

To break the psychological addiction, one needs to change patterns of behavior. I did it with the help of a 12 step program. When I found myself desiring a drink, I called people. When I found myself in a position where I thought I might desire a drink in a particular situation, I called somebody.

It was hard work. It didn't work right away. My last drink found me waking up in intensive care. Cigarettes can be just as deadly. In the end though, when I made that commitment to stop, and when I started changing my behavior, and when I started working a program of recovery, I was able to stop. It's been more than 2 years now. That's not an extemely long time, but it's the longest that I've been without any sort of alcohol for well over 30 years.

If I can do it, your sister can do it. Some people are more prone to become addicted than others, and your sister may be a hard case. What I do know is this: She will not die from quitting. She CAN quit. If there were no more tobacco, she would necessarily quit, so the only thing that keeps her smoking is herself.

Call Nicotine Anonymous or some other program. There are resources. What she needs is to want it bad enough to follow through.

Is it easy? Certainly not. But the truth is that anyone who wants to bad enough will be able to stop.

While there are a few different things she can do to stop smoking, a local herbal business carries a few products that I KNOW work.

1. Liquid Catnip: just put a few drops on the back of her tongue when she has the urge to smoke, and it will take that "urge" away.

2. Smoking Cessation: again, just a few drops on the back of the tongue, plus it helps with the withdrawal aspect. I don't believe it's on their website yet as it's a fairly new product. It contains: Lobelia, Arnica Flowers, Marigold Flowers, Mullein, Catnip in an alcohol base (to act as a preservative and prevent spoiling). It costs: $30.00 plus shipping and handling.

Below are the links for Liquid Catnip and the Contact information for the Smoking Cessation formula.

I tried the patches, gum, wellbutrin and hypnotism and ever herbal mix there is nothing worked except acupuncture. I smoked for 32 years and immediately quit after the acupuncture. I have been smoke free for 2 years. Tell her to just keep trying.

If you are having chronic bronchitis and/or chronic asthma symptoms, try these items: 1) I was never healthier in my life than when I was macrobiotic and doing dance and yoga. I still pay as close attention as possible to my diet, but have found that I personally need to eat more chicken and fish and even red meat, rather than the 50-80% whole grains that macrobiotics usually recommends. I still eat whole grains, still eat tons of beans, veggies, seaweed (not enough tho'), soups, pickles/fermented food, teas that macrobiotics both recommends and embraces. In Ayurveda, asthma and lung issues are usually a sign of extreme kapha imbalance and stagnation. "Kapha" is the earth and water elements, so if you think of imbalance of this as being mud or sludge--cold, thick, slow-moving, stagnant muck--you get a mental picture of what Earth in an imbalanced state looks like, so too is the Kapha personality. In TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine, asthma and lung ailments correspond to the state of health of the Large Intestine. This is to say, lung and large intestine are a formal organ pair in TCM. I bring this up b/c the contents of the Large Intestine, when examined, and when imbalanced, are the closest thing in the body to "earth", or to "muck", when the colon is not in a healthy state. I found my asthma, which has put me in the hospital at several different times in my life, is greatly worsened by dairy consumption, and by excessive consumption of high fat foods, creamy things, and such items as toast w/ butter or bagels and cream cheese every morning for breakfast. I don't eat ice cream or use cream in my cooking. When I stopped eating dairy and moved to CA, a warm, sunny, very dry climate, my asthma disappeared. I've moved back East now, to Vermont, where the very wet, moist, six months of winter climate aggravates Kapha conditions, am (oops!...) eating toast w/ lots of butter, and bagels and cream cheese, and pizza, and, and, and... again AND I have a cat in my life to whom I am exceedingly allergic, but deeply in love with. (Yup. I've slipped and need to pick myself up again and clean up that diet...) and guess what? I'm having to use an inhaler again, and carry it with me wherever I go. Falling off the horse or wagon is normal with humans. We do it all the time. The point, however, is to get back up on that horse again. To begin again, no matter how many times we fall off. Here's some things that help w/ asthma/bronchitis/lung issues: 1) Catalyst/warming herbs such as ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cayenne, black pepper. 2) Honey loquat syrup, honey and lemon, and honey in general. Honey is full of trace minerals, and if local, helps people adapt to the allergens in their locale. It thins broncial secretions (mucous and phlegm) and assists the body in getting them up and out. 3) Quit eating dairy. 4) Quit smoking and being around smokers if that's what you're doing. 5) Eliminate meat and eggs from your diet for a good, long while. 6) GREATLY reduce the amount of fat in your diet--forever. 7) Eat lots of bean and veggie soups, and TONS of greens sauteed w/ garlic. 8) Put lots of fresh juices w/ garlic and ginger into your diet, and drink lots of licorice tea as licorice will calm bronchial spasms. There is also a simply HUGE incidence of adrenal depletion in those who suffer from lung problems, which licorice will help with. It's a smooth muscle relaxant and an endocrine nourisher. It will also help to cleanse the colon. 9) Lobelia helps me, but you need to be careful w/ it, as it's sub-toxic and one can definitely use too much. I have also found burdock, coltsfoot, all the mint family, scullcap and dandelion to be most helpful, as well as many other herbs. If you want, you can email me, and we'll go over each herb and its uses and effects in the body. I also take 100mg of B complex vitamins and lots and lots of C +bioflavonoids on an almost daily basis. Regardless of what any other twit has to say for his under-educated and blind-follower self, I have both found for myself, and seen in friends, family and loved ones EXTREME benefits from both these schools of medicine. I know Marc Halpern at the California College of Ayurveda, have worked w/ Loretta Liberty in Allston, MA in the '80's and have met Dr. Vasant Lad. These are learned, committed, extremely wise and knowledgeable people with advanced degrees, doctoral study and hundreds of years of study between themselves and experts in the field. They are most PROFOUNDLY not quacks, and I am sick and tired of ranting idiots like Kalos being allowed to freely post his poison, while the rest of us get deleted for telling the truth and for trying to help people. Yes, I do get deleted for having the occasional frustrated outburst at such fools as Kalos, and I go away from this "forum" for awhile. Sorry, that doesn't mean I'm a quack either. Do what you will. I've done my best here to give you some ideas about what's worked for me. Do your own research, make up your own mind. See for yourself what works and doesn't. I pretty much have learned to listen and to learn from ONLY myself and a few selected other teachers. (Tendency towards recurrent) Asthma and bronchitis are often genetic and environmental. Asthma is a primarily constitutional disorder, and can take quite awhile to fix. It sometimes becomes an issues of controlling the symptoms for better quality of life, rather than actually being able to send the condition back from where it came. It is possible to heal it, but it is by no means easy. Clean up the fat and muck in your diet and from your intestines and you will see bronchitis go and rarely, if ever, come back again. I go for YEARS without getting sick at all. Email me for more info if you like.
