step 1) always learn the definitions of the words.

learn the definition of the terms, factorial, integer, real, imaginary, complex, etc, you can't understand anything if you can't speak the language.

step 2) take baby steps.
don't jump to the answer. math has very exact steps, no ambiguity. if you go from step d to step e and you can't see what changed and why you need to clarify and put smaller steps inbetween (step d1, d2, d3, ...)

step 3) stop the teacher to explain.
for years I was the enemy of the class, I'd stop the lesson 10x a class, keep the class for 20 minutes afterwards, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna walk away from a lesson and not understand it. It's not gonna get easier studying late night alone when you don't understand it with help.

step 4) if your tired go to sleep and wake up early.
you'll struggle for hours on a problem that the answer will come to you in 10 seconds while your brushing your teeth...

there's probably a lot more, but thats a start. math is wonderful when you get over the overwhelming fear. It's definitive, exact and when you've finished a problem you know absolutely whether it's right or wrong. No ambiguity.

English is the killer. We can argue from now until the sun goes supernova whether or not Michael Corleone is a tragic figure or not and we still won't be any further to an answer than when we started.

Good luck.

PS, think of them as little puzzles instead of work.

OK. So you have a fear of maths. Fine.
Now there are various approaches to overcome it. My approach will be quite different from what people normally suggest.

Solution 1: This is quite simple. Your primary goal is to score well in Boards. Thats the easy part. Most (read all) of the questions asked are from the prescribed NCERT textbook only. I can assure you on that (scored 100 in both 10 and +2). So just do the whole book twice to have that perfection. Better still do another book to have that extra confidence.

Solution 2: This is to remove the fear of maths altogether. People who fear maths actually dont understand its true essense (as do many who find it easy). For this you need to understand its beauty and application in daily life. read some books which do not cater problem solving but deal with its essense.

Hi,

I want to be really frank with you - so tell me how long have you had the fear of the subject. What are the marks that you have scored in the past 2 years ?

I can only tell you that Maths is easier than a lot of other abstract subjects. If you are good at, say, literature and have a good imagination then I dont see any reason why you cant do well in maths.

But.

Like everything else this needs practice. If you have been doing really really bad in the last 4-5 years' half-yearly/annual exams I would say to be realisitc you need to start afresh on all that you have missed out. Its like if you are really bad at adding numbers then I wont advise you to start practising hard on alzebra.

The approach that you can take to pass the subject and probably even get decent marks too is - first assess how much time you have got for the boards. Then see how much time you need to take out for other subjects. If you are doing decently in other subjects you need only 7 days each for those max( believe me I spent only the last night mugging up Macbeth .. but ofcourse I wont tell u to attempt the same).

The point is that you need to make sure you will do well in other subjects and then I guess you will need solid 2 months for maths. If you are really sincere ( well thats one condition tough to follow for anyone but.. its just 2 months, see!) for these 2 months I bet you will pass the subject in flying colors.

To be honest all you need it decent marks in Maths. I know ppl who would decorate their marksheet with marks but never seem to have understood anything.

So just prepare like I said and pass the damn exam. Then I am sure you would be very clear on how to advance ahead.

In case you do really bad .. dont jump to .. Biology just for the heck of it.. 11th and 12th is like 2 years. You can make yourself a genius from a duffer in that time. I know many who have done that.

All that you need is self belief and hard work.

Good luck!

Fear? maths? joking. Mathematics is the most interesting subject. Never be afraid of it. The brain has two lobs. One part controls the computing ability. All You have to do is try to develop that portion of your brain and you will be good in mathematics. When a computer crashes, what we do is we reformat it and load the software. Same way, you developed a fear for Mathematics, either because of bad teachers or because of your lack of concentration. Just by starting afresh with a new vigour and confidence will solve the problem. Just remember, all those who have succeded in life had one thought - There is nothing impossible.

Get a tutor if you can afford it. Not only will you be able to relax when doing your homework (because you know the tutor can help you through the rough spots), but they can help calm you down when you get frustrated. If you can't afford to pay, some high schools and colleges have free services. Ask your teacher or counselor for referrals. Or email your smart cousin in college.

With that in mind, realize that you will still have to sweat it out at times. Math can be HARD work. But so are your other classes, right? That's just normal. So don't beat yourself up because you don't like math, OK? You are not alone in that. But don't blow it off, either. You don't have to like it, you just have to do it. So get yourself some moral support and get it done.

Good luck.

The best way to overcome fear is to face it.
Sit down with your book and start off with some easy questions. Once you have done them your confidence will improve and you would gradually start appreciating the subject. Also, try to be patient as maths requires you to spend some time solving problems of same time repeatedly.

Why do you fear math? In order to avoid that, you need to keep in mind that you can do it just the way you want it to be if you just believe in yourself. I think it would totally be effective if you'd ask for the Lord's assistance. With Him, you sure can do everything at ease. You also have to set your mind that Math is just like any other subject. You can learn and love it more easily if you learn to accept and if you try to understand this subject better. You don't have to fear numbers 'cause they're just numbers. You are the one who manipulate them so you don't have to worry. Just learn to love it and you'll realize that learning math is just as enjoyable as learning any other subject. Never think you'll never make it for it won't do any better. In fact, it will just worsen what you feel about the subject. And lastly, be confident and everything else will just follow!

There is nothing to worry or fear about Mathematics. Unlike other subjects, Mathematics would expect you to give a single-minded focus and attention to it while you are reading/learning the same. Once this attention is in place, Mathematics is just but fun.

Hi. We fear what we do not understand. Remember that math in high school is essentially learning the rules. Follow the rules and the answer will be correct. Always!
