Other than predicting what one volcano will do, scientists study volcanoes and earthquakes to predict what other volcanoes and earthquakes will do. Study of volcanoes and fault lines can help determine how each eruption or earthquake occurred (what led to the incident?). If there is a similiar volcano or fault line somewhere else on earth, scientists can make models of how that active volcano or fault line will react to certain conditions based on what they have learned from other disasters.

1. An earthquake/tsunami warning and monitoring system can be installed. These systems detect tremors or any changes in the Earth's crust. 2. Public education is another way of raising awareness for citizens living in quake-prone areas so that they know what to do when disaster strikes. 3. Infrastructure such as buildings and bridges can be restructured or reinforced to ensure minimal damage during earthquakes. In response to your second question, scientists search for ways so that they will be able to better prepare the public for disasters, so that citizens can evacuate the city in time, thus minimising damage and loss of human lives.
