How to install windows xp on a gateway 98"?

My computer will recognize the hard drive and cd-rom but it wont install windows xp. It will go to where it says reading hardware configuration but if I unplug the hard drive it goes til where it says no hard drive detected.

Hi. The hardware may not support Win XP. Or the copy of Windows may be bad. You do not say how large the HD is but it may also be a problem.

im confused. why would you want to "unplug the hard drive"? if you unplug the hard drive, the os would of course, not install.
