I understand trying to 'honor' them...but why not give a child it's OWN identity instead of giving him/her some crazy first or middle name like 'Mildrid' or something? They just get embarassed later in life and aren't ever proud of it.

I don't mean Jr's and all...just the weird old names!

And 'jachooz', sorry, Illyana isn't a 'trendy' name. It's unique, and I've never known another one. You must have named your kid something whacky to get so offended.

And Pitusi...Illyana was an X-Men too! Maybe that's where most of the matches came from! Heheh!

Out of respect to the honoree. I do agree with you, only name them after someone if the name is modern.

I agree with you about naming a child a really old fashioned name - unless they actually like the name anyway. I would love to honour my grandma but I could never name a child Betty.
I do think that it's good to honour people with names you like, and if you don't like their name then you can change it slightly - for example I am merging my grandma and mother's middle names - Elizabeth and Louise - into Eloise.
I like the name Illyana by the way.

Ha the girl that said she was naming her daughter Eloise to modernize her grandmother's name...
My Great-Grandmother's name, who was born in 1916 is named Eloise. It sounds like you already know why they do it, to honor the person they loved, or because they love the name, and if that is the case, "if the love it" then the name being Mildrid, or something you consider old fashioned, really doesn't matter. And not every kid is embaressed of their name (old fashioned or not) like my hubby who was named after his father Bloyce Dean. Who has his own idenity, and likes his name.
I was named after no one, and my name is Katrina--- I don't like it for obvious reasons. And it's not old fashioned sounding at all, however I used to like it. There is no telling if your baby is going to like their name or not, it's anyone's best guess. My step sister's name is Darbi, I hate that name, but she LOVES it. So...?
I also think that a name chosen in effect by someone you loved in your past, and family member of theirs has a lot more meaning, then something came up with out of a babyname book, no matter how many people had that name before you, or your baby.
I really don't like the name mildrid, but I don't like the name Samantha either...
I remember being embaressed as a child when my 4th grade teacher asked everyone why our parents chose the names they did for us, and all I was able to put down, was "My mom just liked it" I wanted to be named after someone.

I named my youngest son Alexander...which is a very very old name...but it still sounds good and doesnt have that "embarrasing old name" sound to it...but I understand where you come from about some names being embarrasing. As a kid I was the only one with my name and the only people that had the same name as me were OLD! I have grown to accept it but as a kid I always wished I was named something else....(I was named after my mothers sister who passed away..Janice Lee)
I hope my kids like their names when they are in school
(Jacob, Alexander, and Cheyenne)

Well I was thinking about that my husband and I decide when we have another child we are going to give the baby its own name. I was all about the JR but then my husband exsplained that he was already named the name for a reason I changed my mind!

Hum, I wouldn't do it, I'd like my children to have their own unique names, but I don't really get bothered about other people choices.
It's really more of a tradition thing, not something that's gonna traumatize a child.
Btw, I really think Illyana is a pretty name, but not so unique, 84,300 matches in google ;)

I think that if you like the name and you like the person then it is a great thing to do. When I have a daughter I will give her my moms name or my grandma's name as a middle name beacuae I love them and I like their names.
However, I would never give my child the name Mildrid, even if it was my mom's name, because I don't like it.

It's not really like they are using someone else's identity. I am named after my aunt Diane and to tell you the truth, I hate my name. But I have my own identity. People choose to name their kids after someone else because 1. they either really like the name or 2. they want their kids to know that there was someone that was special to them that they thought so much of that they wanted their child named after them.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it a horrible name. All 3 of my kid's were named after a family member & believe me they are all individuals with their own personality. Their names mean something, they aren't just a cute name pulled from a baby name book.

I want to name my son James after my dad. Some names have a lot of meaning behind them and there is nothing wrong with naming a child after someone very special.

I'd rather be named Mildred and have everyone know how to spell it instead of being named Courtne or Krystyne or Rebekka or Chopana and having to correct everyone who would try to spell my name.
My name is not my identity - I am my identity.
