13/12 = 572/x
x = 572 * 12/13 = 528

Total pupil = 572 + 528 = 1100

İf there are 13 boys, then there are 12 boys corresponding to that number.

There are 572 girls in a school. Then the boys corresponding to that must be in a 13 to 12 ratio. Let x be the number of boys in the school, then solving for boys gives:

13/12 = 572/x
x = 528 boys

The problem asks for the total pupils in the school altogether, so, you add up the number of boys and girls.

572 girls + 528 boys = 1100 pupils in total.

Finished. Of course this is only one way of doing it.

That means that 13:12 is the same as 572:B where B is the number of boys in the school.

B = (572/13) x 12

B = 528

So the total number of pupils in the school is 572 girls + 528 boys = 1100.

572 girls
therefore 572 X 12/13 boys = 528
total pupils 572 + 528 = 1100.

Or 572 x (13+12)/13 = 1100 pupils in total

Using two equally valid methods is a good way to check your result!

Best Wishes!

13/12 = 572/b
13b =12*572
b = 12*572/13 = 528
Total = 572 + 528 = 1100

13:12
13=572
12=x Cross multiply
13x=12(572)
13x=6864
x=528
Total = 528 + 572 = 1100

i answered an almost identical question a few weeks back, so just pasting what i wrote back then :-

if you are told that two quantites are in a certain ratio to eachother then what are you saying? if I said that type1 and type2 were in the ratio of 2:1 then what would that mean?

it would mean that there was twice as much of type1 as there is of type2? or another way of thinking about it would be to say that the number of type1 is equal to 2 multiplied by the number of type2.

what about say the ratio 5:3? whats that saying? well again if these represent the ratio of type1 to type2 then we are saying
that 3 multiplied by the number of type1 is equal to 5 multuplied by the number of type2.

so, saying this using some easy algebra, we can say that:-

number of type1 / number of type2 = 5/3

'cross multiplying' this then says that :-

3 x number of type1 = 5 x number of type2

for your example though we are told that :-

number of girls / number of boys = 13 / 12

well if we are tackling problems like finding the number of two quantities from another quantity if we know the ratio that they are in, then what else do we know? well in this case that:-

number of girls + number of boys = total number of pupils

lets make some easier terms here, if we write 'ng' for number of girls, 'nb' for number of boys and 'T' for total number of pupils then:-

ng + nb = T

but we know ng as thats given, its 572, so:-

572 + nb = T

and also we know that 572 / nb = 13 / 12

well these are two simple simultaneous equations?

from the second one we can see after cross multiplying that nb = 572 * 12/13 = 528

so, T = 572 + nb = 572 + 528 = 1100

so like everyone else i get 1100 too
