I would love to escape from society more than anything: It would be idyllic.

If I had to pick a place to escape to, it would be just where I live, but without people. :-). I live in west Michigan where it's warm in the summer at the beach and cold with the snow and you can just curl up in front of the fireplace. That is, with just one other person <3 What can I say, I'm crazy about him.

Rarotonga. A beautiful tropical island in the Pacific which only twenty miles in circumference with only one road around the island. Very friendly people. Very slow pace of life. Everybody speaks English. Only one channel of TV with 4 hours of TV per day. No obsession with celebrities. Just like I would imagine the Caribbean was thirty years ago. And to top it all the cost of living is about half that of the UK!!

Although it is not truly escaping from society it would suit me.

i already have. i escaped from it a very long while ago. i just gave up on society since there's so much hypocrisy and unfairness etc. i do things for myself now - i don't buy things from shops (except food) anymore. i've escaped to an underground lifestyle and now i don't even know what's going on in the news unless someone tells me.
best choice i ever made

Then do it. Its not that hard. You can make enough money in six months working as a janitor to save up enough to travel the world for a couple of years. You just have to give up on luxury items like TVs and computers and heat.

Check out Vagabonding by Rolf Potts. That book really opened my eyes. If you want to drop out of society, it's pretty easy to do. You just need to stop talking about it and do it.

Great Idea. I could just in the car and drive catch a boat or two and the worlds your oyster.

Sometimes I would like to be by myself on a deserted island. But I know it's not realistic, because I would want all my stuff, too.

I would go somewhere were life is simpler. American life is very hectic and complicated.
