We have several Senior Centers in my city and I have worked with them, as well as, several that are in surrounding cities. I did this while I was still working.
Senior Centers are a world of activity and socialization to keep our elderly society interested and involved in life. Some Seniors have no relatives, so this is a good thing.
The better question is "what things are not available for use by the Seniors in the Center?" The point being that not only do they have games, meals (congregate and Meals On Wheels), trips, Health Fairs and Job Fairs, they also are a primary resource center for Seniors when they are in need of something, whether it be a roommate or a Social Service.
As far as I can tell, there are no disadvantages in having a Senior Center. It's all a win-win situation for the Senior and the Community, as well. Seniors love to become involved in Volunteerism and Community Service, in this action, they give to the Community on a continual basis. Seniors are some of the best resources a town can have.
I do not attend a Senior Center, yet, due to a disability I am working with to inhance my ability to get around. But, in my work life I found that even the persons with the "not so great personalities" when they started, came around to being some of the nicest people on the face of the earth.
Senior Centers are worth every penny that is spent on them. There is enhancement for everyone and for the Community, and this is what I like best about them.

We do have a Senior Center in our town and it is free to the seniors. They have meals served. The seniors that feel like it pitch in and help cook and serve. They have all kinds of things for the people to do. They have a craft fair every year so things the people have made can be sold and they can make a little extra money for themselves. The center sells refreshments at this time and that is all they get out of it.It basically pays the electricity for the day. Right now, they are also having Tai Ching lessons and line dancing. It doesn't cost to get into these either. It is great for our seniors and great for us because it keeps everyone healthier. Mentally and physically.

My town does not have an actual senior center. The YMCA has a couple mini vans that will pick sneiors up and take them to the store or to their doctor's appointments. Plus, they have a Meals on Wheels that delivers food to the door of the elderly. The YMCA also sponsors several trips a year for seniors only. And, they have exercise programs that cater to the seniors. A few of our local nursing homes have senior centers that sometimes have activities that the public can participate in...like name a king & queen of the nursing home.

Yes, use of it by seniors is free, there are meals that are 'donations' priced. Think it's good to have the meal center - probably the only meal some of the folks get in a days time. There's card playing and shuffleboard for a little comraderie. Don't take advantage of it yet -- it's more for the "old" folks.

Our town has a senior center. It is free to residents and they serve lunch daily. They also hold a free picnic in the summer and holiday party. I don't belong (yet) but they have bus trips and play cards and just get together to be around other people. I think it's a great place for people who have paid there dues and deserve something back.

Our town has a senior center with a few activities. I saw nothing that was free and the "free" meals cost $5. They have priced themselves out of my range. And this is supposed to be government sponsored(?) .

No, my town has a free meal centre, but it is for all ages. There are no seniors activity centres and it's a shame as I see many walking around the town with nothing to do.
I think I'll write to the City!!! There should be something for the seniors.

We have about twelve at last count. Admission is free to all of them, but there are small fees for certain programs and activities. All have feeding sites. In addition, there are several charities and churches which participate in the Meals on Wheels program.
The activities include dance lessons, exercise classes, and any number of arts and crafts classes. In addition, special events are held. Everything from Hawaiian Luaus to jazz concerts.
I use them on rare occasions. Mostly for the Senior Health Fairs and the occasional jazz concert.

i can't think of the different senior center grilling her as to why she would opt for to pass to their center, or turning her away the two. Our Senior center has in no way asked for inner maximum information. yet another component, sounds like the SC on your city needs some volunteers or somebody with suggestions to help run issues. Why no longer you and your mom step up and locate out why the close by center is so ineffective

Yes and its free. You can have lunch there for $3.50! For use: there are games, a computer, and sometimes there is a speaker after lunch. I like it because the "regulars" are very nice people and several have a good sense of humor! It's a good place to visit once in a while - but I do not go there on a regular basis!
