We don't do large Christmas parties, just family, but I try to make out a budget several months early to work from. I tend not to buy Christmas gifts for my kids too early, because their wish-list seems to be ever changing, but I take notes of what they mention and when things keep repeating and I know that a specific item is what they really want I start shopping around for the best price.

I started shopping in October, I got about half of it done. I got the easy ones to shop for out of the way. I have never been to a work related Christmas Party. None of the jobs I had, did that. I have a new job and the hospital may. It's just family for us. We eat, talk, laugh, talk about past holidays, talk about family that have passed away and memories of them. Sometimes watch tv, which sometimes ticks me off. This year will be a little different. My cousin will have her baby shortly before Christmas.

My wife starts before Thanksgiving. I wait until Christmas Eve...on purpose. I never have much to buy and never anything specific. I can take my time, enjoy the lights and scenery, and have a friendly smile for the shopper who's in a panic. Sometimes that little smile brightens someone's day.
