If you want to mend the relationship (and you should, she's your husband's sister, right) not only buy her a gift but a card with an apology and offer to forget your differences. Even if everything's her fault, your apology cost you nothing and may go a long way to fixing the relationship. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

it's always good to make the first step toward a friendship. even if it include giving a gift.

is your sister-in-law married? does she have kids? you could always give a gift to the whole family.

also, you and your spouse could buy a gift together and give it to her from the both of you. this may be the best idea because it will not make her feel like you were trying to make her look bad. it will not add to the rivalry.

That is not the spirit of gift giving and it would not make you look big. If you are not speaking there is no reason to buy and five gifts.

Sure, be the bigger person if you can afford it. I would stick to getting her a gift card to a store she really enjoys shopping at. Have fun!!
