Hey everyone! I'll be 18 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I have a alil bump but im not big at all by any means. Recently, over the past 2 weeks especially ive noticed that im getting this weird pain in the right side of my back when im standing or walking around a lot. It almost feels like a strain in my muscles that won't go away till i sit down...when im at the mall walking around it starts to sometimes kick in when ive been on my feet for a while and seems to get worese the more i stand. I was wondering if this could be due to the baby even though im not that big yet. Could it be that the baby is more towards my back and thats the reason for the pain and for maybe why im not as big as some at almost 5 months. This is my first pregnancy. Thanks!

Size has nothing to do with it. The uterus grows inside first, this causes a strain on all the muscles and tendons that hold it in place- they can be around the groin, the sides, the back, and across the belly.

Its totally normal.

Good luck...I started having those same problems around 18 weeks as well. I am now 31 weeks and oh boy are they worse. The baby is most likely very posterior. I am almost 8 months and I look like I am about 5. Size has nothing to do with it because I am small too and my pain feels like I should be 8023493 lbs! Warm showers and rest are my only signs of relief. But congrats!!

Oh my goodness it only gets worse...

Invest in a good ice pack and a heating pack now. Also stock up on Tylenol for the days when it gets bad. I had the worst back pain ever, leading into the worse back labor ever. Just take it easy, DON'T pick up ANYTHING heavy and try to keep your feet up as much as you can. Ice 20 minutes, then heat 20 minutes and so on for an hour, that helps...and make sure you're drinking loooooots of water.

It could also be an ache in your kidneys, cause they work double time with baby. Make sure you're drinking lots of water. Did I say that already? Lol. It's important.

Could be many reasons, but ur pregnant and you need rest as much as possible. Do not strain and push urself. Would be terrible if you pulled a muscle or something worse then u would have to be bedridden. That is not good. Not good at all! drink lots of water, try to stay active. Its your first pregnancy and things are new and weird. Ask your OBGYN. They are the professionals. Everybody is different and every pregnancy is different. OH, and make sure ur taking your vitamins..... they make a huge difference! Good luck!

I have not used one but my friend who is 34 week pregnant has used a belly band to help support her belly and its weight. I am lucky and it has not been too bad for me. However when I do get back pain the only thing that helps is to lay down and relax all the muscles in my back. I have my husband give me back rubs also. He is not the best but they help a lot. Make sure when you are sitting at school or work you sit straight and have good support to lean back against. Best wishes

It's most likely due to the baby....no matter how BIG you are....the extra weight etc will make it harder on your back and legs when you stand for long periods of times etc. try to rest often....and you CAN see a chiropractor as well (they worked wonders for me when I was around 6 months pregnant and couldn't get out of bed my back hurt so bad) just make sure that when you set up the appt that you tell them that you're pregnant (they have to use a specific table to work on you).

Also...make sure you sit and walk tall....posture is important now. The change in your center of gravity will make it harder for your body to adjust....and try NOT to hunch your shoulders.

When in doubt, blame it on the baby!!

In this case, the baby is pushing on your sciatic nerve and giving you those back problems. Also as you adjust your body to carry the extra weight, muscles in your back are being used that aren't normally used.

Sadly, it will only get worse as the pregnancy progresses. Keep up on the Tylenol (safe during pregnancy) and make sure you stop when it starts to hurt.

it's totally normal .
Due to all the strain on the back due to the uterus growing of course it is going to hurt and your going to have ALOT of backpain .

Or the baby could be laying on your nerve.

Good luck and Congrats.

My son laid on my pelvic nerve! Talk about pain!! I couldn't walk, have sex, anything without pain! As long as I didn't agrivate it, it was ok. Sounds more like your sciatic nerve to me though. Ask your doctor if there is anything you can do. Maybe a prenatal massage.
