To provide entertainment for the citizens of Rome. It was always intended to keep the population happy by staging spectacular games (of the brutal kind), including sea battles in a flooded Colosseum, wild animal hunts, execution of criminals and of course gladiatorial combats.
Gladiatorial events originally had a religious connection, but this was almost forgotten by the time of the Colosseum.

also to promote tourism. They were upset that they had built it too late as the 7 wonders list had already been created. They wanted to promote that the roman way was the best and spread the glory of rome.
Also Nero had supposidly started a fire to reclaim some land to build a palace, so it was also a way to get people of their backs!
Please note there were no chariot races in the colosseum.... everyone seems to think there was due to movies, that was the circus maximus

the colluseum was built as a stadium for roman games
its a stadium just like the rose bowl in california or giant stadium in new york or wembley in london
built for the same reason -entertainment of sport and shows entertain
