Dumbledore in the books did not change, sweetie. The actors who played him did. Dumbledore in the first 2 movie adaptations were played by the late Richard Harris who died a few weeks before the premier of the Chamber of Secrets. He was perfect as Dumbledore down to the twinkle of his eyes under his half-moon spectacles.

The succeeding movies were then played by Sir Michael Gambon who's really a good actor but failed to portray Dumbledore as the books say. The problem lies in the fact that he hasn't read the books unlike Harris (whose granddaughter was a fan and who told him that she won't speak to him ever if he don't accept the part!). Gambon merely relies on the script and the director's instructions, so we get a different Dumbledore. He's the only reason why I dread watching another HP movie after Azkaban. Gambon never fail to irritate me with his protrayal.

Yes, in the first two movies Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the late Richard Harris played headmaster Albus Dumbledore, in the following movies Micheal Gambon has played in the role of headmaster Dumbledore!

Congratulations. Richard Harris passed away, and was replaced by Michael Gambon. Gambon really changed Dumbledore's character a lot in a bad way. Harris actually had Dumbledore nailed in the way he acted. Sad that he passed away.

Richard Harris passed away before filming of the third movie, and was replaced by Michael Gambon. In my opinion, Gambon will never really be Dumbledore. Harris nailed it.
