it works fine except when i go to turn it off for the night it automtically restarts. so i pull the plug for it to stay off.
need help.

You might consider looking into the settings. Sounds like who ever had it last, did something goofy.

Do you turn it off using the button or do you use the start>turn off computer command. If you are pressing the button it is set to restart the computer by default.

Try Re-installing Windows.
I know that there is also a setting that you could try in Power Management section in the Screen Saver area.

u r not turning it off but see carefully the option during shut down process (as combo box sometimes show restart)

This used to happen to my PC so many times until I upgraded to Windows XP Home.

well... compaqs kinda suck in general... so a used compaq will have issues... you should hire someone to check it out though... it might be a system problem... Good luck!
