...besides all the typical rules of horror movies aside, one definite positive benefit of watching horror films, is the release of built-up tension, via the stimulation of one's personal fear level; most people would agree that they feel most relieved once they leave the theater, and return to the comforts of reality, and their homes. I, personally enjoy going to horror films, late at night, especially with an easily frightened lady friend at my side; although once we leave the theater, the tension is still there...having to get home in the dark...the dead silence...the occasional rustling, or odd noise...the sensation of fear is so exciting...like a wild roller coaster ride!!!...
...to speak of the positive benefits of watching horror films, is not unlike talking about the positive benefits of greasy ol' fast food; I suppose, in THAT respect, there are no real positive benefits...sorta like junk food for the mind. Funny how horror films, in general, have far less respectability (...unless they're done really, really well) than say, dramas, westerns or even comedies. I tend to look at it, this way: sometimes one can be in the mood for filet mignon, but a good part of the time, you just gotta have a greasy, grimy ol' ratburger!!!
...anyways, it's good to revel the positive benefits of horror films; I really get tired of these so-called closed-minded 'experts', or enraged parents, who claim that the degradation of young people today can be partially, if not wholly placed on the violence on film, especially horror films. I'm of the general opinion that young folks today, are much more intellegent than that, and that if the general knowledgeable conscencious believes that a mere horror film causes someone to get bad grades, perpetrate crimes, or even enact violent acts upon their fellow man, I'm of the opinion that something was wrong with that person, in the first place...
...sorry about the literary soapbox derby, here; sorta got off the subject, didn't I???
...I have one, if you can use it; mine is "...if someone calls, and ask you to check the children, then it's a sure bet that the caller IS in the house (...and has a very big knife!!!); never mind the front door...if you have to jump out the window, open or closed...GET THE **** OUT OF THERE!!!

-Do NOT climb higher up in a building if you are being chased. This leads to a dead end or the necessity to jump from great heights.
-Do NOT live alone without a baseball/cricket bat.
-Do NOT let a lone police officer into your home, they traditionally come in pairs.

I learned not to infuriate people that I think might be crazy in case they come after me with an axe.
I also learned to hide under my blanket if I hear noises when I sleep.
