What would happen if the Leafs signed Tavares and then lent him to Russian club? Tavares could then end up with more money than the max NHL rookie pay and do an end run on the draft.

Let's say for arguements sake there's a 16 year old who is the greatest player since Gretzky. An NHL team signs him to a ten year contract with his parent's permission and then sends him to Europe for two years. He then comes back to play as an 18 year old for the NHL team without being drafted. Is there a rule that prevents this scenario?

The CBA expressly forbids any member club from signing any player who is not yet draft eligible.

So, anything beyond that is a moot point.

And again, Toronto sportswriter Steve Simmons admits raising the issue for discussion, and that there is no truth to any of the Leafs/Tavaras rumours that have spread like wildfire.

Current Rules for Undrafted Free Agents
A North American born player who plays junior hockey cannot be signed as a free agent until 2 years have elapsed from the time of his initial draft eligible date.

A North American born player who plays in the NCAA cannot be signed as a free agent until he has completed one year of NCAA hockey.

A European born player who plays in Europe, can not be signed as a free agent until after his 21st birthday, provided he has not been drafted. Any team can draft a European player who has not signed a contract at any age provided he is 18 by September 15th of his draft year. This gives the team drafting him exclusivity in trying to sign him (this does not apply to North Americans)

It is relatively simple

1) Tavares wants to play in NHL as soon as possible
2) Underage players cannot play in the NHL
3) The draft is the mechanism to get players to the NHL(someone is going to draft him)
4) For any end run to work he will have to sit out the 2 yrs after he is drafted and play elsewhere- Europe?

What does Tavares want? to play in the NHL. What is the fastest way to get there? To be drafted and play for the team that drafts you.

Forget the end run scenarios, it ain't happening.

If the Leafs could sign Tavares, why would they lend him to anyone?
No, the Leafs cannot sign him.
I like the kid, but he is going to have to wait, just like everbody else.
