We live in an apartment where we can hear everything above us (footsteps, talking, cell phones vibrating, etc.). Our landlords claim to have installed a carpet with padding in the room above us, but there is no difference in sound transmission. Does anyone know specifically what type of padding should be used to reduce these noises? It is currently impossible to sleep or relax in our apartment and we have another five months before our lease is up. I would like specifics to take to the rental company so we can get something that will actually work.

I think you are stuck in the situation. The flooring should have has sound deadening installed when built. I have not seen a carpet padding that will cure this problem. You could call a couple of the larger carpet stores in your area for their solutions or ideas.

Its probably in the construction and not easily resolved. Soundproofing should have been put in during construction but its often not required. I assume that the primary concern is not getting sleep? A temporary fix would be to get some sound deadening material (rigid foam for instance) and attach to the ceiling. You would have to fix the holes with Spackle and repaint when you leave, as well as not looking very attractive, but..............

I agree...I build hi-rise condos for a living and we have attempted to use "sound deadening" pad in the past. It doesn't work and on top of that it has the tendency to bunch up requiring a constant restretch of the carpet.
