If you could do that, you could also withdraw from someone's account. The answer is no.

I worked in a bank and sometimes you could, and sometimes you couldn't. If you know the person's full legal name and address then you probably can. Take the check to that person's bank and tell them you want to deposit it, but don't know the account number. They will try to look the person up. Sometimes there are dozens (or more!) people with the same name so the more information you have (birth date, for instance) the better. If the teller can find the account holder (without any doubt) then they will probably accept the deposit. However, if there is any ambiguity, then they wont.

To deposit money into someone's elses account, you do NOT need to know their account number. The check you are depositing MUST be made out to the account holder and 100% of the check MUST be going into the account. You will just have to tell the teller the name of the account holder and possibly the address to insure they have the correct person. If the teller is unwilling to do this, speak to a supervisor or manager. Even though you are allowed to deposit money into someone else's account, you will NOT be allowed to withdrawal money it.
We do deposits like this all the time at the bank that I work at.

Yes as long as you are depositing 100% of the check and the check is made payable to the person listed on the account. You will get a deposit receipt without the account number listed if you need a receipt. If you are given a receipt with an account number, the teller is then in the WRONG because it is illegal for them to give that out.

Yes! My mom does it on occassion for me when I am out of town (hubby works for her, then she can deposit his paychecks) or can't get to the bank. And....

My husband is the executor for his late mothers estate. With this he has a checkbook used only for bills and improvements. My name IS NOT on the account. Because I work in town by all the banks, I am the one who does all the depositing in that account. I have never had a problem. I have even signed over my paychecks and deposited them in the account before they were even cashed.

You can only deposit, not withdrawl if your name is not on the account. I don't understand why you think they wouldnt. It is kind of like if you want to give, then that is your perogative, but you cant just take someone else's money.

I believe that DEPOSITING is ok , it WITHDRAWLS they dont take lightly.
If you are a sister or girlfriend... telling the banker you need to make a deposit , but dont remember the account number they usually can do it from the name... but it also depends on the bank you are using.

The banking system is complex..even the people in the bank don't know how it works..If you know the persons name and bank..you can send or take a cheque to the bank and ask if you can deposit the cheque in their account..on the back of the cheque put the name and address of the recipient..businesses are easier as you just put the name of the business..Most people paying bills by cheque don't know the recipients bank number ..How ever if any-one reading this who has a large cheque they wish to deposit in some-ones account..send your cheque to me and I will put an account number on it just to keep you happy.. (mine)....!!! frank..

You should be able to if you know their full name; if the teller can't or won't help, ask to see the manager. My bank sometimes asks for ID when I deposit most of my check, and I always tell them, if someone else wants to deposit money into MY account, please let them!

I think if you find a nice teller, and you are depositing 100 percent of the check for someone else's benefit, and its a "safe" or local check, then you might be able to get the bank teller to do it.
