I was just reading this story about Steve Burns, the former host of "Blue's Clues", who recorded an album with some of the members of The Flaming Lips:

Now plenty of established musicians have made appearances on kids shows (there have been a ton on Sesame Street) but they were able to return to the careers in music that they already had. Besides being in some bands while growing up Steve didn't have much of a musical history, so do you think he will be able to erase the image of the striped rugby shirt and be accepted in the rock community?

Morning, MachPen! That's a good question, because there definitely is a stigma there.

Dani - "Here's the mail, it never fails, it makes me want to wag my tail"...WOW!

And Fergie was another one I forgot about!

wow.....I don't think I could......my son watches the old Blues Clues stuff......no I'd keep imagining him singing the mail song.

Its the same kind of thing with Fergie for me. I grew up watching her on Kids Incorporated.....I didn't take her seriously then, and I still don't.

MachPen - Oh yeah.....her, Martika (the Toy Soldiers chick) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (though she came later) all were on there

Morning everyone !

As for the question, I say - why not? I don't understand why there's such a stigma with performers who once identified with a different industry, and then switched over to another. Is it just that the American public is so skeptic that a person can actually be "ambidextrous" when it comes to more than one talent? Who knows? An example (and probably not the best) is Jared Leto - the dude who played Jordan Cataleno in "My So Called Life" alongside Claire Danes. When he came out with his 30 Seconds to Mars act, he got rotten tomatoes even before his album was released. Not a big fan of 30 seconds ... but it was the best example I could think of for now.

Hi. Happy Monday guys.

I definitely think so. It all depends on how good he is. Personally, if I were him I would try to separate the two "identities" to remove the "can we take this guy seriously?" thing, but even if that factor is there I think if he releases a really good record people will get behind it. I think that the number of people who would not buy it for that reason will balance out with people who would buy it out of curiosity, wondering what the guy would do. I also think doing it with members of the Flaming Lips, being established and having that industry cache helps speak to his credibility. I know I'm curious.

Hi Dave, Alanis Morisette was on You Can't Do That On Television. That's crazy. I watched that when I was a kid.

A person's employment background on the childrens tv industry shouldn't be a reason for him not to be taken seriously. Just because he was a former children's entertainer doesn't mean that he can not pursue his lifelong ambition to do something better for himself. There are many people out there that are successful in the music business that doesn't have a good background as he is. Many of the sucessful musician had to start somewhere, why can't Steve's start his career in childrens entertainment?

Alanis Morrisette some what accomplished that. Although not a big name host of a show like Steve Burns but in her early days she was on a show called "You Can't Do That on Television". I think if done right people will except the change

If I went to a show, and his band opened, I would have had no idea who he was. So, I think since a lot of people are out of the kids television loop, I think it is possible.
However, if he tries to market his music toward an audience familiar with his work, then I think they would have trouble accepting his new work.
I think he should go on stage with the blue dog ears though. That would be funny.

I heard the original Pink Power Ranger recorded an album after she was off the show. And even though she really doesn't count because she was a product of Disney, Hannah Montana HAS a show and puts out albums.

Sure he can be taken seriously. For the most part, the masses might not even know his past resume. But more importantly, I don't think he should be penalized for his past. Rob Zombie did work on Pee Wee's Playhouse and nobody has held it against him so far.

At least he didn't sing back-up vocals for Viva Viagra!

Prof - Election Day isn't until tomorrow. Did you get voted out of office already?

I have no idea... but my son refused to watch Blue's Clues after Steve left. At the tender age of 3, he looked at me and said "Daddy, Joe sucks."

Otherwise, simply based on what I've seen of him in the Blue's Clues Big Musical Movie, he's not a bad singer.

Well, can a former B movie actor and star of Bed Time for Bonzo ( a story about a chimpanzee) be taken seriously as the President of the United States? Ronald Regan did it.
And he slayed the Evil Dragon to boot.
