Is it somehow likely or even possible that one day in the distant future, we will be co-existing or dare I say, 'governed' by intellectualy superior, reasoning, thinking emotive machines ? cybernetic organisms ?

Basicly asking whether or not A.I can reach a stage where it becomes 'alert' and begins to play havoc with everything mankind has innovated since the copper wire conductor.

Go ahead and accuse me of watching too many sci fi movies, thats not what we're really here to discuss. my question centers around the very eerie thought of machines , getting SO smart that they one day 'wake up' and begin to challenge us on earth, god forbid even enslave or terminate us. :-|

I would love to hear from scholars in this field, who can give me some thought from ground up on the potential of such an event happening. Any thoughts from anybody interested in A.I, robots, cyborgs, angry toasters and 'static kitchen appliances' feel free to answer :-|

This isn't an issue I worry about, in spite of the science fiction movies that try to convince me it's a real issue.

Do I believe that we'll eventually have very smart machines that appear to think and reason? Yes. Emotion? No, unless it's intentionally simulated. But it won't be real emotion like we're used to.

Do I think that there's a potential for machines to run amuck? Yes. Do I think it's a real danger? No. I don't think we would ever give the machines that much autonomy.

Remember -- to run amuck, the machines would need to have a desire to do so. Desire is an emotion. Sure, faulty programming could result in catastrophic events, but that could happen now. Software failures could result in all sorts of bad things -- airplanes crashing or being flown into each other, power plant failures (potentially a major catastrophy), or even some sort of nuclear weapons accident. But these would be software failures, not the software "deciding" to take over the world.

Big business interests has already turned a huge percentage of the human population into "artificial intelligence" where we are doing what ever we are programed to do-mislead with imagined "fears" while ignoring the real dangers. Our Legislators are no longer our "Representatives" and are now "Law Makers" to enforce the will of the Money makers that contribute heavily to ensure their own political careers. Be afraid-BE VERY AFRAID! God help us.
