Beethoven's mother was Maria Magdalena van Beethoven. She was born Maria Magdalena Keverich in 1746 and died aged only 40 from tuberculosis in 1787 when Beethoven was still short of his 17th birthday.

She was a caring mother and Beethoven was badly affected by her death. She came from a poor family and Beethoven's father, Johann van Beethoven (1740-82) was her second husband (the first one died when she was only 18).

Though the above answer is correct in that Beethoven's mother was a kind and caring individual and Beethoven was moved by her death, it should be noted that he came to dislike her intently in his later life.

Beethoven's father was an alcoholic and would often beat on both Ludwig and his brothers after a night of drinking. Beethoven later came to blame his mother (however misguidedly) for not standing up to his farther and protecting his brother as he had tried to do in his youth.

This led to a distrust of women as parents that followed Beethoven and is believed to be one of the many reasons that he fought so hard for custody of his nephew Karl after the death of his brother Karl Snr in 1792 believing that his wife would not provide a stable upbrining for the boy.
