Tsunamis are waves caused by earthquakes under the sea, because of this definition they happen many times a year, but most are no larger than normal waves as the earthquake that produced them isnt very large, Large tsunamis, the ones that everyone thinks about when you say 'tsunami' are rare and occur less than once in 10 years, even these in 1 in 10 events aren't as large as the sumatra tsunami.
