Any kind of detergent will damage the finish and then the dirty will penetrate the wood. If the dirt penetrates the wood, you wont have any other choice but call a professional to sand it and refinish. We had to do refinish it when we bought our house and the guy that did the job told me to use only clean water and a little bit of vinegar to mop - 2 tablespoons of vinegar per pail of water. Change the water frequently.
Buy a product called "Rejuvenate" a floor restorer and apply it pure to thoroughly clean floors with a sponge mop. It shines, protects and seals the wood, and the floor won't skid.
Your floors will look brand new

Hoover makes a wet dry vac (I'm sure other brands do as well) that is JUST for hardwood and laminate floors. It is very nice and very easy to use. It has a solution that you put into the water and the machine does all the work. It is alot like running a vacuum cleaner and cuts the time you spend on your floors in half or better i highly recommend one. You can get them at just about any store.

I watched this show on TLC once and they were cleaning this really nasty house (not saying that your house is nasty)... they got borax and water and made like a paste out of it and scrubbed the hardwood floors with it. It stripped all kinds of dirt and wax off... then they waxed it with parafins wax (just like chunks, not melted) and it make the floors look BRAND new... it would be very time consuming I am sure though. But it would make it look VERY nice and clean... sorry that may be over kill...
You can try to mop with vinegar and water and see if that helps. That is a mild degreaser and it may take off spots and the vinegar wont hurt hardwood. Good luck.

If your floors are finished all you need to do is get a slightly damp mop with a solution of vinegar and warm water.. I cup of vinegar to 1 gal. warm water... I would give em' a good vacuum or use a microfiber dry dust mop to get rid of any loose dirt/hair etc... If the floors are unfinished vinegar/warm water works as well... Just be careful NOT to saturate the floors or they could warp...
