Does shelf paper serve any practical purpose or is it just a cosmetic thing?

I spent my weekend ripping it out of the kitchen cabinets in my recently purchased house, and I can’t figure out why someone would waste the time to install it when it doesn’t do anything but look stupid. If there is a purpose, someone enlighten me please. Otherwise, I’m going to hunt down the inventor and hurt him/her!!

These are newer MDF cabinets. So it’s completely pointless in this situation…

Originally, shelf paper was not glued down. It was merely a device to prevent the paint from getting on the items placed in the cupboard. Then some genius had the idea to make it fancy and glue it down.

Most older cabinets have bare wood shelves. Bare wood is tough to keep clean and germ free... shelf paper provides a barrier between the wood and your dishes.

I have no clue why somone would paper a finished shelf.
