When referring to a "group" of regions, use "the" (The Nederlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, The Russian Federation). When it is a single country, drop the "the" (Ukraine, Russia, Ireland).

To make a correction for the first post, Ukraine has never been called "the Ukraine" outside of the English language, because they do not have articles like "the" in the Ukrainian language. "The" was added by English speakers because they always thought of Ukraine as a region of Russia under "the USSR".

The Netherlands
Ukraine (it was called "the Ukraine" when it was part of the USSR but doesn't seem to be anymore)
