WASHINGTON (Oct. 27) - NASA has agreed to search its archives once again for documents on a 1965 UFO incident in Pennsylvania, a step the space agency fought in federal court. The government has refused to open its files about what, if anything, moved across the sky and crashed in the woods near Kecksburg, Pa., 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Traffic was tied up in the area as curiosity seekers drove to the area, only to be kept away from the crash site by soldiers.

The Air Force's explanation for the unidentified flying object: a meteor or meteors.

"They could not find anything," one Air Force memo stated after a late-night search on Dec. 9, 1965. Several NASA employees also were reported to have been at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said a flatbed truck drove away a large object shaped like an acorn and about the size of a Volkswagen bus. A mock-up based on the descriptions of local residents sits behind the Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

UFO enthusiasts refused to let the matter die and journalist Leslie Kean of New York City sued NASA four years ago for information.

"This is about the public's right to know," Kean said. "We would be doing this lawsuit regardless of whether UFO groups were interested in it or not. It's a freeodm of information issue."

The agency has turned over several stacks of documents which Kean says are not responsive to the request, an argument that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan agreed with.

In March, Sullivan rejected NASA's request to throw the case out of court, resulting in negotiations that led to the agency promising last week that it will conduct a more comprehensive search.

Kean said Friday that she sued NASA rather than the Army because the space agency a decade ago released some relevant documents on the case.

Because NASA Knows More About The Kecksburg Event Than They Claimed, And Now They've Been Caught Red Handed With Information About The Event. They Are Searching Files To Fabricate A Defense.

It amazes me how someone could give a thumbs down to the answer provided by the first poster. He is absolutely correct, both about there being no UFO crash and the intelligence of our current leader. This "investigation" is undoubtably someone filing a freedom of information request. Such requests require the government agency involved to hunt up old records and submit copies. I suppose you could call this an investigation if you want to twist the truth and tie it in knots. After all, thats exactly what our President is doing.

There is no cover up. It is like the weapons of mass destruction that Bush said Iraq had. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING was going to convince him that they didn't exist. Even taking over the country and capturing and interrogating Saddam himself and having 100,000 of our troops search the country for a year totally unhindered did not convince Bush that he had been wrong. And you expect that NASA turning over some more documents would satisfy these UFO believers? Get real! NASA just wants to stop wasting time and money pandering to the fantasies of there crazy people.

(EDIT) OK, I added this part after I got two thumbs up and one down.

I will compare it to another situation. It the book "Life and Death in Shanghai", Nien Cheng describes how the red guards tore up her home and yard looking for gold bars. She turned over all her gold jewelry and all gold she had but they were not satisfied because Mao wrote in his little red book that all rich people had gold bars buried in their yard and hidden in the walls of their homes. So the UFO people just believe the government is hiding UFOs like the red guards believed Nien Cheng was hiding gold bars. They will never EVER believe the UFOs do not exist.

And another example, The Salem Witch trials. People were executed for casting spells that harmed others. Of of course that was all nonsense, but it made no difference because the people involved could not PROVE thay hadn't cast spells.

So when you tell a truth to people that don't want to hear it, they don't hear it. SImple as that.

a) people don't trust the govt

b) people don't like you criticizing the President

these two explain:

1) why asking for documents is an 'investigation'

2) why answerer #1 got a thumbs down (so did you!)

what it doesn't answer is:

Alpha) why all gov't released documents are heavily redacted to the point where people don't trust the gov't even MORE after their release

Beta) what is this love affair I have with INDEXING?
